The Builders Of Local Democracy group also known as B.O.L.D. consists of residents of Tameside. The group seeks a change in the style of local government for Tameside under the Local Government Act 2000. The change which is sought is a change to a directly Elected Mayor and Council Manager arrangement. The group is not affiliated to any political party and was formed in November 2000. Since that time, we have been carefully planning our approach. Regulations made under the Act provide that 5% of a borough's voters are needed to sign a petition to trigger a referendum on Tameside changing to an Elected Mayor and Council Manager structure. For Tameside, the 5% currently translates into a little under 8200 people. The referendum, as the name implies, would submit the decision to the entire electorate of Tameside. If the referendum result favoured the Mayor/Manager organisation, then an election would follow with the various candidates standing to become the Mayor directly elected by the voters of Tameside. B.O.L.D. would put forward a non-political candidate in an election for Mayor.
